When you get this error trying to install a SCOM 2007 Agent its most likely a firewall issue.

Sure you can drop the firewall and install the agent that way, but that’s weaking your security too much. Instead, open up these Inbound connections in your firewall.

File and Printer Sharing (SMB-In)
Windows Management Instrumentation (DCOM-In)
Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI-In)

If you’d prefer to use the command prompt you can use the netsh command with WinRM

winrs –r:yourservername netsh advfirewall firewall set rule name=”File and Printer Sharing (SMB-In)” dir=in profile=any new enable=yes
winrs –r:yourservername netsh advfirewall firewall set rule name=”Windows Management Instrumentation (DCOM-In)” dir=in profile=any new enable=yes

Note: I actually got this information from the “Discovery and Agents” video from Winstructor’s SCOM 2007 R2 Training Videos.
SCOM Error: The group can not be modified because there is no group population rule defined for this group.

When you attempt to add clients to one of your “Business Critical” groups in SCOM 2007 you may get the error “The group can not be modified because there is no group population rule defined for this group”.

What does this mean?

Well, it means that you haven’t loaded the Business Critical Monitors themselves. When you added the Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 Management Packs from the console it may not have added the XML files required for Business Critical Monitoring.

So how can you fix this?

Download the “Windows Client OS Operations Manager 2007 MP” MSI file and install it. This will extract a bunch of files to your hard disk. Amongst these files will be 3 new files, XML files that are the business critical ones you need.

In the SCOM Operators Console, import these 3 files. “Go to Administration, choose Import. Click Add from Disk and find those XML Files and import them”.

Now try and double click the Business Critical Groups in the “Authoring” view. The error is gone and they will now allow you to add client machines to the Explicit Members Tab.

Add the names of the computers you wish to monitor to this tab and you’re golden.

Ever tried to run a SCOM 2007 Task and get the following error message?
Failed to create process due to error 0x8007010b : The directory name is invalid, this workflow will be unloaded.

Ever tried to run a SCOM 2007 Task and get the following error message?

Failed to create process due to error 0x8007010b :
The directory name is invalid, this workflow will be unloaded.
Command executed: "C:\Program Files\Support Tools\NETDOM.EXE" query fsmo
Working Directory: C:\Program Files\Support Tools\
One or more workflows were affected by this.

The problem is that the working directory is incorrect. This task is expecting to find the “NETDOM” command (in this example) in the C:\Program Files\Support Tools folder. However on Windows 2008 Server for example, it’s found in the C:\Windows\System32 folder.

The solution is to override the value: Click “Override” and set the Support Tools Install Dir to the real folder where the task command is to be found.

Very easy to do and now it will run just fine.

In Windows 2008, we use repadmin.exe to troubleshoot Active Directory replication. Repadmin allows you to dig deep into replication, down to the level of the replication metadata and the up-to-dateness vector. You can specify Password Replication Policies (PRPs) with Read-only Domain Controllers and enable/disable replication for a given Domain Controller and manually configure a replication topology.

Let’s run our first command:

repadmin.exe /replsummary

This /replsummary command will identify Domain Controllers that are failing replication (inbound or outbound) and summerize the results in a report. This report can be the basis of your Active Directory replication troubleshooting actions.

If one of your Domain Controllers is failing replication we can use repadmin.exe to force synchronization immediately. We’d run the following command:

repadmin.exe /syncall DCName dc=domain,dc=tld

Where DCName is the name of the replication-incapable Domain Controller and the domain and top-level domainname (tld) specify the Active Directory Naming Context to synchronize.

Of course, when you have a serious Active Directory replication problem, trying to force replication like this will only show more errors, pointing you in the direction of targeting specific Domain Controllers and/or objects.

Another repadmin.exe command of particular use it the command to stop and/or start inbound and/or outbound replication immediately for a specific Domain Controller. This is useful in scenarios where you want to make changes to a Domain Controller, but don’t want them replicated to other Domain Controllers. The commands are easy:

repadmin /options DCName +DISABLE_OUTBOUND_REPL
repadmin /options DCName -DISABLE_OUTBOUND_REPL
repadmin /options DCName +DISABLE_INBOUND_REPL
repadmin /options DCName -DISABLE_INBOUND_REPL

Of course, many Microsoft schema updates and preparations have checks for disabled inbound and/or outbound replication. Thus, you can’t always use the above commands in these scenarios.

And this gem: Checking whether an Active Directory infrastructure successfully prepared the domain and forest for Windows Server 2003. And checking whether the changes have been replicated to all Domain Controllers:

repadmin /showobjmeta * "CN=Windows2003Update,
CN=ForestUpdates,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=tld"

repadmin /showobjmeta * "CN=Windows2003Update,
CN=DomainUpdates,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=tld"

Any Domain Controller, not returning it has the object, has not yet replicated the Active Directory preparation. Until you’ve replicated the object to all Domain Controllers, it would be ill-advised to continue and promote the first Windows Server 2008 Domain Controller.

How can you export a Sealed Management Pack? Well, here's how you can.

I received an email asking how can management packs be exported when they are sealed.

Well, the answer is simple. If you’re using the GUI, you can’t do it as the “Export Management Pack” option will be unavailable. But you can do it from the Command Shell though. Try this:

This will require you to have a folder called “C:\Backups” to store the exported management packs so make sure you create the folder first.

$mps = get-managementpack | where {$_.sealed –eq $true}
foreach($mp in $mps)
{export-managementpack -managementpack $mp -path "C:\backups"}

If you want to export “All” management packs and not just the sealed ones, then you can run this modified and shorter version.

$mps = get-managementpack
foreach($mp in $mps)
{export-managementpack -managementpack $mp -path "C:\backups"}

Give that a shot.
